"Freedom is what you do with what has been done to you"
~Jean-Paul Sartre
Our lives are a collection of things we have experienced; things that have been done to us. The question becomes: are we defined by the things that happen to us? Do labels and stigmas define who we are, or who we will become, as a person, a partner, a parent, a professional, ...?
No, I would argue these things do not define us; they are simply things we have experienced. I believe the key is what we do with them afterward. I believe that at some point in our lives, we can make the decision to stop letting our past define us and determine our future. We have the freedom to take back control over our lives and our future. Counseling can help you use that freedom to attain the personal growth you are striving for.
